The moment that Vera Wang realizes a celebrity has shunned her design for another red carpet gown, she describes as being similar to 'having your guts ripped out.'

The designer, who was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at last night's CFDA Awards, said it is 'devastating' when a celebrity makes a last-minute dress change before a high profile event.

'I don’t care what status of designer or what history you had or whether you’re an emerging designer,' the 63-year-old told WWD. 'It’s so painful not only to you, but your sewers, your staff, your assistants and P.R. people.'

She added: 'It’s like having your guts ripped out of you because you’ve given it your all.

'I remember something Carolina Herrera said once that was so profound: "You know, when you hurt me you’re not just hurting me. I can take it. But everyone around me that gives up their life for me can’t."

The gamble designers take on dressing a celebrity for the red carpet - with frantic sewing, sketching, and multiple fittings - is like 'Vegas and then some,' the designer said.

Her candid comments come just months after Anne Hathaway apologized to Valentino after a last-minute dress change at the Oscars.

The 30-year-old, who won Best Supporting Actress, surprised onlookers when she arrived in a pale pink Prada gown hours after Valentino released a statement saying the French fashion house had dressed her for the event.

She explained that she 'deeply regrets any disappointment caused' related to her decision to wear Prada, after she heard that another actress, rumored to be her co-star Amanda Seyfried, planned to wear something similar to her original choice.

Ms Wang, who has dressed A-listers from Michelle Williams and Jessica Biel, to Kiera Knightly and Jessica Lawrence, also confessed to taking it 'very personally' when her a celebrity makes a Worst Dressed list in one of her gowns.

'It worries me a great deal,' she said. '[I have] a lot of anxiety. Because I do care about what we put out there on such a public, global platform.'

But all that anxiety was put on the back burner last night, as the designer took home last night's night’s top honor, the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Becoming visibly tearful in her seat, Ralph Lauren — wearing jeans and cowboy boots — presented her with the award.
